NIAB welcomed HRH Anne, The Princess Royal to a BBSRC workshop held at the Cambridge Park Farm site on 10th October. The workshop focused on crop diversification and underutilised crops, a key area of interest for both NIAB and Crops for the Future (CFF).
Upon her arrival, The Princess Royal was welcomed by Cambridgeshire Deputy Lord Lieutenant Caroline Bewes DL. She was then introduced to several local dignitaries including Lucy Miles, the Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet; Dr Bharatkumar N Khetani, High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire; and Councillor Peter Fane, Chair of South Cambridgeshire District Council.
NIAB CEO Professor Mario Caccamo accompanied Princess Anne into the Sophi Taylor Conference Centre. There, she met with main speakers and notably, Professor Peter Gregory, Chair of Crops for the Future. Following these introductions, Her Royal Highness joined approximately 60 delegates from across industry, academia, and government for the BBSRC workshop.
The Princess Royal addressed the delegates, sharing her insights on how diversifying crops within food systems can enhance the health of both people and the planet. She drew upon her extensive experience from visiting rural communities and farmers worldwide, as well as her personal involvement with her estate and farm in the Cotswolds.
Her address was followed by presentations from prominent figures including Professor Gideon Henderson (Defra Chief Scientist), Professor Guy Poppy (BBSRC Interim Executive Chair), Dr Fen Beed (FAO), and Professor Sayed Azam Ali (CEO of Crops for the Future).
Later, The Princess Royal toured NIAB's glasshouses with Professor Mario Caccamo and Dr Lydia Smith. During the tour, she viewed examples of underutilised and minor crops that hold potential for wider cultivation and popularity in the UK.
This visit highlights the growing importance and recognition of research into underutilised crops for future food security and environmental sustainability.
